Stripping & Refinishing the “Secretary”

Stripping & Refinishing Secretary

I found this piece at an estate sale just around the corner from where I live…

My hubby happen to be passing by and noticed the sign…..

Well I jumped into my car as fast as I could and headed to the place where all the action was….

Fell in love with this old antique secretary….needed some tender loving care…..in other words …. WORK….but I was up to the challenge…..and of course the price was right.    🙂

It’s solid Mahogany Wood….Beautiful!

 Items needed to restrip

Made a list of items I would need for the extreme make over…..

Stripper, Stain, Gloss, Brass Cleaner and Wood Filler……

along with paint brushes, plastic gloves  and blue tape….

I cleaned and sanded the wood….then I wiped it down really good to remove all the sanding dust.

Next…..I applied the stripping agent as thick as possible…. going in one direction……

Leave stripper on for recommended time….

you may need to add more stripper if the paint and varnish does not come off easily….

I used a putty knife to remove the stripper….along with an old rag……for the smaller areas…

Then I wiped it down with mineral spirits to make sure all the stripper is removed….

Ended up putting more stripper on this area…..

Did not come off the first time…..  🙁

Took the brass handles off…..they were in need of some extra cleaning…..

Brasso to the rescue….

Filled it in using wood filler and then sanded it down…..

 Now ready for the stain…..

I’m using Red Mahogany Stain….

It was the original stain on the piece….

Make sure to let the stain dry completely before going to the next step…

 Next apply the clear gloss…

Ended up putting 3 coats of gloss…..should have only did 2…..

had too much running going on with the 3rd coat….

Still turn out nice…..

In his own special way…   🙂
